Tomorrow is 'First Bell.' Even before communism, everywhere throughout the soviet world, children, parents, and teachers alike got together on September 1st to kick off the school year. The tradition is to dress up in your finest school uniform, bring flowers and/or balloons, and go through a 45 minute ceremony with the conclusion of the 'ringing of the bell' so that school can officially start.
This is serious stuff.
