This year while we were home I picked up the best book ever! It was the Bible. :)
I bought two, one very large, leather bound, beautifully packaged Bible with all the trimmings and maps, concordances, etc. (to replace my dilapidated one from college) and one very small paper back 'One Year Bible.' I have to say that although I love both of my purchases, lately I love the latter more.
I used to be the type from my Bible college and seminary days to not allow myself to just read one portion of a book... No sir, it had to be the book in it's entire form. Context is king. And, yes, it is king. But I'm taking it at a slower pace this time. And it's nice to be able to read a bit of the OT, NT, Psalms and Proverbs each day and then meditate on it. Another neat feature with this Bible, is that I know I'm not the only one reading these particular passages on these particular dates. There's an entire website dedicated to the daily study. It's been refreshing to get back into the pure and simple Word of God minus all the devotional books, commentaries, Hebrew studies, etc.
Just my journal, my little paperback, and my thoughts about why Saul went to see the witch of Endor. And how did David have the strength to refrain from hurting Saul that day in the cave while he was sleeping? And why did all the kings have so many wives when God specifically said for them not to in Deuteronomy? And how brave Ruth must have been to go out to a new working field and be the odd one working hard at something she didn't even know how to do well! And how special Hannah must have felt every year when Samuel would return to visit her. And how bad Lazurus must have smelt when he wobbled out of that cave all bound up after four days! And what the woman at the well must have felt in her heart when Jesus told her how many men she'd been with and still offered her hope.
I guess I'll rest in these words:
"It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man. It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in princes." Psalm 118:8-9
That's from Day (May 21st)... ahhhh that was a good paperback day.

I'm sorta envious of your Bible reading time. I've tried to do the one year bible, but get behind and discouraged...one of these days! Thanks for sharing and inspiring me once again.
well, the good thing about it, is if I miss a few days, it doesn't take long to catch up! It really is so easy and encouraging. You can do it!!!
that is encouraging! we are still muddling through on Daniel, on the 7th chapter, and it is starting to get a bit difficult to follow. all those kings, dreams, & empires rising & falling! we are learning alot of mini details, and noticing mini miracles that happened in the midst of the lions den. Sometimes it shocks me how God always breathes new and fresh truths each time we read His word!He is thoughtful that way!
